THAI announces its “2020 sustainability vision” and joins hands with NSTDA’s Food Innopolis to launch “Save Food Save the World” project
Mr. Saksayam Chidchob, Minister of Transport, and Mr. Varawut Silpa-archa, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, presided over a signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for Food Waste Management between Thai Airways International Public Company Limited (THAI), Thai Smile Airways Company Limited, and National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA)’s Food Innopolis to launch the "Save Food Save the World" project with an aim to pilot an airline that reduces waste of food resources as well as the amount of waste generated from food production in THAI Catering Department and the amount of food left over from THAI’s flights. The event took place at Thai Airways Head office, Vibhavadi Rangsit Road.
Under this Food Waste Management project, in the first year, THAI will focus on verification to improve food production and service system throughout the supply chain ranging from raw material purchasing, production of THAI Catering Department, food menu planning, bringing food into the plane, to inflight waste management including experimenting with new approaches, such as managing all inflight food services and developing a pre-selected menu system for passengers to choose prior to the flight. It is expected that this project will help reduce up to 20% of food waste. The project will be used on THAI’s flights on European routes in 2020 and will be implemented on all THAI’s flights by 2021.
