Sumeth Damrongchaitham, THAI President, said Japan has long been THAI’s high potential market thanks to its popularity amongst Thai tourists, with a continually rising growth rate, as the Japanese Government has waived visas for Thai nationals. THAI’s new flights to Sendai serve as an economic gateway that will generate longstanding development in the Tohoku region, which not only supports regional trade and tourism but also encourages an exchange of knowledge and good relations between Japan and Thailand. This also supports government trade and investment policies. Therefore, the Tohoku region views THAI as not merely an airline but as the representative of Thailand that can usher development into the region. THAI’s Bangkok-Sendai flights have 80% advance bookings through to March 2020.
THAI operated its Bangkok-Sendai inaugural flight on 29 October 2019 and Sendai-Bangkok inaugural flight on 30 October 2019 with Boeing 777-300 aircraft, royally bestowed the name “Lahan Sai,” which has 364 seats: 34 seats in Royal Silk Class and 330 seats in Economy Class. THAI received permission to paint the aircraft in Suphannahong Royal Barge livery with the Royal Emblem in Commemoration of the Royal Coronation Ceremony.
THAI would like to express its gratitude toward the executives of the City of Sendai, Miyagi prefecture as well as other prefectures in Tohoku region, in addition to Sendai International Airport and Toyota Tsusho for their support, trust, and assistance in launching THAI’s new route that brings increased comfort and more flight connectivity between Japan and Thailand.
Sendai, located 300 kilometers northeast of Tokyo, is the capital city of Miyagi prefecture which is one of the six prefectures in the Tohoku region. Ski resorts located in this region are unique due to their abundance and because they are open for skiing even in the summer. Tourist may travel to other prefectures in this region: Aomori, Akita, Iwate, Yamagata, and Fukushima. Sendai is blessed with perfect scenery and warm climate. Also known as the City of Trees, Sendai is beautiful year-round, especially in autumn during the change of seasons. Despite being the political center and economic hub of Northeastern Japan, tourists may seek peace at onsens, Zuihoden, Osaki Hachimangu Shrine, and many other shrines. Gyutan, grilled beef tongue, originated in Sendai and is one of the local dishes that must be tried when visiting the city.
