Phanom rung Castle
Phanom Rung Castle embodies the greatness of Khmer culture. Perched atop an extinct volcano, the situation recalls the legacy of Buri Ram’s landscape. Since its construction, this castle has radiated its magic, recently becoming even more popular with visitors after being used as a setting for the hit Thai series & Movie “Nakhi”.
The castle possesses a quaintly mystical beauty in the Nang Riang colonnade pillars that lead to the Naga Bridge, which symbolizes the link between the Earthly world and Heaven. The walkway leading up to the main stupa - which symbolizes the home of the deity Shiva - is also luxuriously decorated. Another highlight of Phanom Rung is the reclining Vishnu lintel (Thap Lang Narai Banthomsin) above the eastern pavilion.
Considered to be one of the world’s most beautiful carved stone lintels, it was stolen during the Vietnam War and spent many years at the Art Institute of Chicago in USA before being returned to Thailand.
It is the only national treasure that the Thai government has been able to recover. If you look closely at this lintel, you will find the carefully hidden figures of animals such as dragons, parrots and monkeys.
