The repeated sound of hammering coming from a small lane acts as a sign post for visitors to Ban Bat community. Ban Bat, or ‘monk’s alms bowl village’, is an old community of craftsmen who fashion handmade alms bowls for monks; an old craft dating back to the Ayutthaya period. Ban Bat is the only community that still preserves this craft.
There are many areas in Bangkok where visitors can appreciate various valuable old crafts but Ban Bat is one place that should not be missed; this might even be the only place in the world where this craft is still practiced in its traditional form.
It is fairly easy to visit the community. Head to the small lane named ‘Soi Ban Bat’, walk along the lane and you’ll see craftsmen tending to their work enthusiastically on either side. Some are hammering the bowls into shape; others are welding pieces of metal together. Small bats are also available as souvenirs; they can be used for any purpose.
